What are customers saying about
Ooka Island products?
“WE have loved this program. My sons ask to play it all the time. It is probably the best program I have found for introducing so many different steps to learning to read. It covers letter sounds, letter identification, sight words, consonant blends and vowel blends, reading comprehension, and more. I was a little nervous about the price but it was well worth it and I would definitely do it again.” - Christina, Parent of 5 years old twins
“Travelling to Ooka Island each day is a fun, interactive activity for young learners. It enables them to work with letters, sounds, words and books. The constant positive reinforcement encourages even the most hesitant learners. It is exciting for me to listen to my kindergarten students try new sounds and “talk” to the computer. Everyone returns to the classroom feeling Ooka….riffic!!!!”
- Wendy Walker, Kindergarten Teacher at John J. Sark Elementary School

“In October, my son started only knowing 5 sight words. He is now on level 5 reading for the third quarter of Kindergarten and he still has another two months to grow and the summer also. He also now knows 25 of the first grade sight words, and really tackles words based on the sounds. It has also been incredible to see his eagerness to interact with text, and pick up books of various genres. Thank you Ooka Island for giving my son a solid foundation in reading.”
- Parent, Maryland
“Ooka Island’s Adventure has been a wonderful way for our Kindergarten and First Grade Students to reinforce and practice early literacy skills. Students are very engaged in each of the activities at the various islands. The motivating graphics hold their attention! I was so excited to see that leveled text is a part of this program allowing students to utilize the skills they are learning in authentic text. The administrative side of the program is easy to use and offers a variety of reports to view student progress. The ability to leave students a positive sticker and the way the program emails me to congratulate students helps to motivate students. Our school is very excited about the possibilities with Ooka Island Adventure!”

“We have really enjoyed this product. Weve had a couple glitches, but the Customer Service took care of them right away. Even over Easter Weekend! So I was impressed. My daughter really loves using this program, and Im so glad we got it. I only ordered the “free trial” for my son, since I knew it would be too easy for him. And he still enjoyed playing it for a week or so! My daughter (8, dyslexic) uses it almost daily.”

“My 3.5 yr old daughter LOVES it! She is learning so much its amazing. Im excited to see what she learns in the year we have it.”
- MM, Homeschool Buyers Co-op Member
“My daughter loves everything about the game. She’s had been working with a tutor prior to the beta testing. She was so happy when we started her on the game at home.
- Deanna Brown, Parent
“I will definitely purchase this game. You have a great product and most importantly, it’s as fun as some of the non-educational games my son seems to like online. If it wasn’t engaging, my vocal 5 year old son would have told me how boring it was and switch to another game when I turned my back.”
- Parent
“The avatar setup and creation in addition to the robot was the hook for my child.”
- Abena S., Parent
“The Cave of Sounds was one of my son’s favorite games because he felt as if he was actually on a roller-coaster ride. It was a true virtual experience for him filled with laughter and nontraditional learning. He’s already a techie and gamer at heart so these games cater to his learning style.”
- Parent
“This morning I decided to use the Ooka game with the little girl I’m tutoring. It was the best decision ever!!! Lately, she’s been very tired and not able to focus for extended periods of time but now I finally found something that keeps her interest for the entire time!! She loooooooooved the Ooka Island Adventure. Cake Factory was her favorite and Cave of Sounds was a close second!! She breezed through the 6 sounds we’ve already covered and picked up the new ones with no problem. This is a huge achievement – it usually takes us a few sessions to master a new sound.”
- Tutor, Boston
“After two days I have one complaint – my kids didn’t want to get dressed for school this morning and they were fighting over the computer to play Ooka!!! So really, that is a good complaint.”
- Mother of three, British Columbia
“I like the Ooka Island Adventure. My favorite game is Word Ball.”
- 5 year old Ooka Island Adventurer
“We purchased Ooka Island through a GroupBuy. My 5 yr old loves it! At first she was frustrated because she couldn’t play in the playground when she wanted but once she got used to the rotation she was fine with that. I like the idea that they have to finish their lessons before being able to have free play… I am very happy with Ooka-Island!”
- Kris T., Homeschool Buyers Co-op Member
“What an amazing reading program! Thank you so much”

“This will be a big help. It’s nice to work with a company that actually cares about its customers!”
- Teacher, Arlington, VA
“Maddie loves being able to rescue Ooka Elves and loves playing Word Ball and scoring goals against the Fliggs. Sarah loves Word Ball and playing in the Pencil Playground. Aaron loves the stories and characters in Popcorn Library. He really likes singing along to the songs, too. All three love the Submarine activity, especially when the Fliggs splash into the water. The learning curve is great — my kids are learning a lot!”
- Parent of three Ooka Island Adventurers
“My son is three and loves the Cave of Sounds. Theo knows what the game is asking him to do and mimics the sounds.”
- Parent of three year old Ooka Island Adventurer
“I have found the Ooka Island books to be an excellent resource for emergent readers. What I find most helpful is the large font size, large enough to be seen clearly by young readers, but not too large to be inappropriate. The same characters being used throughout the entire series is extremely helpful. The students love seeing Kayla, and Jazmin as they work through the series. And of course, Boo. All of the students seem to relate the best to him. As the books increase in difficulty, I am pleased to see more adjectives and more complex language structure used than in other series. This provides students opportunities to practice word solving skills at a much more challenging level. I highly recommend Ooka Island books for intervention teachers and reading teachers who work with Kindergarten through Second grade students. They are well written and well designed.”

“I received the Ooka Island books today after work. They look amazing! Darius’s eyes lit up when he saw the books, and he made me promise that we’ll continue with the black chapter books tomorrow night after school. You’ve made my young reader very happy indeed!”
- Parent of six year old
“The children love the Ooka Island Bookpath. They can’t believe they are going to read all of these books on the computer.”
- Tutor, Charlottetown, CA
“As a home-school parent of a lively six-year-old boy, I can tell you firsthand that the Ooka Island Books and Story Game Cards keep my son’s interest. Every day Josh and I play word recognition games with the cards and then read a book from the red collection . He loves the characters in the books and remembers the story line. Josh reads the books aloud to his own teddy bear before bed. I would highly recommend the Ooka Island Books for anyone looking to jump start their kids into reading.”
- Parent of a six year old
“I am writing to say thanks! The way the Ooka Island books, cards and guides work together is amazing…when we have friends over, my daughter wants to teach everyone how to read…I’ve sent the Emergent I Kit to my sister who lives in California so she can have the same experience with her children!”
-Lori T., Parent
“I love how the books match the pictures to the words on the page – it’s an important detail that is hard to find in early readers.”
- Rebecca, Parent
“I’ve read the Ooka Island Books and they will help your child to read and write. Jim Barber did use a lot of techniques that Dr. Seuss used. He used fun pictures and stories, large print, and things kids can relate to in the characters and stories. Even though I’m in 6th grade, I still like the stories. They’re cute.”
- Taylor M., 6th Grader
“It’s such a natural thing to want to read…I can spend a long time reading Ooka Island books with my grandson.”
- Gribby B., Grandmother
“… appropriately leveled library, constant exposure to high frequency words, and easy to follow entertaining stories allow children to feel successful and enjoy reading from an early age. These components and more make Ooka Island’s print program a great supplemental package.”
- Kathy P., Reading Specialist
“The students love the readers. They ask almost everyday if they can read one of them. Thanks!”
